Modular hardware design

Training systems feature two double-sided, mobile workstations, linked together with a hitch mechanism:

  • The Process Workstation is the hub of the different processes to be investigated by the students, and houses pumps, pipes, valves, boiler, and all other components, parts of the circuits.
  • An Instrumentation Workstation houses the electrical and pneumatic units, as well as other electrical equipment, such as the variable speed drives, controllers, PLCs, color paperless recorder, and touch screen graphic terminals.

This recreates the widespread industrial practice of separating the process environment from the instruments and controllers, while limiting the risk of exposing such equipment to contact with water.

Complete, turnkey courseware

The learning solutions are part of the Instrumentation and Process Control program, which uses modern equipment and a complete curriculum to help students assimilate the theoretical and practical knowledge that is mandatory to work in the process control industry.

For each process, pedagogical content begins with a training system familiarization, and continues to measurement, then to basic and advanced process control. Specific equipment guides or manuals are also available for a wide range of components, so that all devices are well documented.

The necessary theory is presented in a straightforward, clear manner. Hands-on experiments are detailed and illustrated to support independent learning.

Smart devices: HART or FOUNDATION Fieldbus

Many components of the systems feature a transmitter, which is able to communicate via one of two communication protocols: HART or FOUNDATION Fieldbus.

  • The HART protocol enables communication between devices by superimposing digital signals on top of the existing 4-20 mA outputs.
  • The Fieldbus protocol is like a Local Area Network (LAN) for smart devices.

Most of these devices can usually be configured manually via their alphanumeric display and/or push-buttons, or via a remote computer. Calibration kits are available for each protocol.

Well-known brands

The systems provide a wide array of sensors, transmitters, and controllers from well-known brands, such as Honeywell, Endress+Hauser, Rockwell Automation, Fisher, and Foxboro. This ensures that training is aligned to industry standards; real-world processes can be easily replicated for learning purposes.

Software support

To efficiently support laboratory experimentation and enhance student understanding of the processes, the following software programs are available:

  • The SCADA software programs, Wonderware Development Studio (including InTouch) and FactoryTalk View Studio (from Rockwell Software), come with an interface specially designed for the Pressure, Flow, Level, and Temperature Process Training Systems. An OPC server for the Foxboro controller is also available.
  • LVProSim is a free simulation software that offers simulation of different process control schemes, as well as control, for data acquisition and PID control of a real process.

Troubleshooting skills development

Troubleshooting of industrial process equipment should be an integral part of training. Our learning systems feature many tools to help instructors devise troubleshooting exercises for the students. Faults can be inserted in most devices: controllers, PLCs, transmitters, etc., through different methods.

Pressure, flow, level, and temperature processes

The Pressure, Flow, Level, and Temperature Process Training Systems introduce students to a wide range of industrial processes, as well as to their instruments, control devices, and troubleshooting.

The system also features training on complex control loop strategies, such as the ones used for controlling a level in a boiler. The boiler simulation allows students to apply a variety of advanced control strategies, such as split-range, ratio, and feed-forward.
